See also 19th Century Juvenile Series. The death of Daniel Lothrop, head of the D. Lothrop Company, of Boston, removes a veteran from the ranks of American publishers, and a representative of one of the oldest American families. His ancestors came from the mother country to New England more than two hundred years ago. In youth Lothrop devoted himself to book-publishing as his preferred career. He began publishing when proprietor of a book-store in Dover, N. H., in 1850, and went west and opened a store in St. Peter, Minn., in 1856; but soon after the war he returned to the more congenial east, and established in Boston the business since known by his name.
