PUBLISHER: The Merriam Company, St. Paul, MN & New York, 1891-1897

ABOUT: "In 1893 The Merriam Company of St. Paul, Minnesota, succeeded the Price-McGill Company, which had been formed in 1891. The firm moved to New York city early in 1894 when it acquired the jobbing business of Saalfield and Fitch, 12 Bible House, Astor Place. Merriam soon moved to 67 Fifth Avenue and was incorporated there in February 1895... In the fall of 1897 Merriam went into receivership upon the application of Robert H. Merriam, president, and Arthur James Saalfield, a director." (DLB 49:302)

"Robert Hale Merriam (28 April 1868 -) came from a wealthy Minnesota family and had been involved in the Price-McGill publishing firm as well as The Merriam Company in Minnesota... [age 26 in 1894], he had to give up daily management of the company for health reasons" [and, mismanaged, it soon failed]." James D. Keeline, "The Stratemeyer Syndicate and Its First Major Challenge: Chatterton-Peck and Quinn & Boden," presentation at 2011 Popular Culture Association conference, p7 (note 3).
