1898 ADVERTISEMENT

The present issue of the REFERENCE CATALOGUE OF CURRENT LITERATURE inaugurates a new departure. Despite the steady expansion which has accompanied each succeeding edition it has hitherto been deemed unwise to separate the List.

In response to a very generally-expressed opinion from those best able to judge, the Catalogue has now, however, been divided into Two Volumes, the INDEX being included in the First. These comprise the Complete or Abridged Lists of One Hundred and Fifty-three Publishers, and the Index to these extends to Five Hundred and Fifty-six pages, containing Ninety-nine Thousand entries, an addition to that of the last issue of nearly as many entries as were contained in the entire Index to the Original Edition of 1874.

The preparation of an Index of these dimensions is naturally a prolonged and laborious task; the final sorting of the Alphabet, which must of necessity be performed by one pair of hands, requiring constant and sustained effort. It is to be feared that in some few instances the references may not be absolutely accurate; should this prove to be the case, it will be due to the fact that more than one Catalogue as bound differs materially from that supplied to us for Indexing purposes, both as regards paging and the arrangement of subject matter.

Every book contained in the REFERENCE CATALOGUE will be found in the Index, under Title, Subject, or Author. In many cases it has been thought expedient to give a book as many as three entries, so that even if the Author or Title were unknown, a search under the specific subject might, in almost every instance, ensure success.
