1894 ADVERTISEMENT

The present issue of the REFERENCE CATALOGUE of CURRENT LITERATURE is considerably larger than any of its predecessors. It contains the complete or abridged lists of one hundred and fifty-six publishers, and the Index to these, fills five hundred and fifteen octavo pages, and includes, upwards of eighty-seven thousand entries.

The excessive bulk of the work in itself constitutes a serious impediment to its speedy production. The task of finally sorting eighty-seven thousand slips into perfectly alphabetical order, must necessarily be done by a single pair of hands. As the number of slips dealt with becomes larger and larger, an ever increasing ratio of time and labour has to be given to this tedious work. If, for instance, it required fifteen minutes to sort into alphabet one hundred slips, it would take much more than ten times that period to sort one thousand slips, and so on, as the slips multiplied. We mention these particulars, in order to justify, to some extent, the tardy appearance of the bulky volume.

We have thought it needful, also, to improve and strengthen the binding, and we hope that it will now be found better able to withstand the rough usage to which the work is frequently subject.

Every book contained in the REFERENCE CATALOGUE will be found in its place in the Index, under Title, Subject or Author. In many cases, it has been thought expedient to give a book two, or even three entries, in order that it might not, under any circumstances be searched for in vain. If, therefore, a work were in demand of which neither author nor title were known, if it were on a specific subject, it may almost always be found entered under that subject.

It has been suggested that the time has now arrived to issue the REFERENCE CATALOGUE in two volumes. This, however, would be inexpedient. It would not only greatly increase the cost of the binding, but would often defeat the particular mission which it is the object of the REFERENCE CATALOGUE to fulfil -- that of keeping all the catalogues together. If issued in two volumes, one or the other would continually get lost or mislaid. At present the huge volume is too vast, and too conspicuous ever to be lost. If, therefore, its dimensions are a little awkward, it has the advantage of being visibly at hand whenever it is wanted.
