ABOUT: The earliest imprint date so far noted is 1885, the latest 1901.

Note Publishers' Weekly 56:#1436 (5 August 1899), p216: "The Bay View Publishing Co., whose New York office, at 156 Fifth Avenue, is under the management of John Hovendon, has purchased from the Rodgers Co. of Philadelphia, the stock and plates of the Excelsior edition of standard works. This series already contains 56 titles. The volumes are printed from new plates on good paper, and are very attractively bound."

1899 PTLA: 156 Fifth Avenue, Presbyterian Building, "Popular Classic Series in Cloth and Fine Bindings" include the "Excelsior Edition" (Lucile is #15) and are described: "These volumes are selected from the most noted authors, and are fully illustrated, well printed from NEW plates on GOOD paper, and bound in fine bindings such as have NEVER BEFORE been put on books sold at these prices. Price, per volume, 50 cents." Lucile is #15 in the series of 56 titles.

A listing in Publishers' Weekly 56:#1444 (30 Sept. 1899), p442 reads: "The Bay View Publishing Co.., N.Y. Popular Classic ser., Excelsior ed. 50 v., 16mo., ea., 50c.; hf. leath. 16mo, ea. 75c.; Devotional ser., 23 v., ea. 16mo, 50c."

The Trow (formerly Wilson's) Copartnership and Corporation Directory of the Boproughs of Manhatten and the Bronx XLVIII (March 1900), p37, has entry: "Bay View Publishing Co. N.J. (John Hovendon, Pres.; Edward Barr, Treas. Capital $23,000. Directors: John Havendon, Edward Barr) 156, 5th av." Barr appears to be, p34, "Barr, Edward, Co. (Edward Barr, propr.) 78 John."
