Biography
Beulah
Marie Lucas was born in 1899 in Pocahontas, Iowa, the oldest of six
children. In 1915 at age sixteen she
began keeping a diary and did so for three and a half years. On September 22, 1920 she married Herman
Yocum and with him raised three children.
Beulah Marie Lucas Yocum died in 1990.
Scope and
Content Note
“The Diary of Beulah Marie Lucas written
12/25/15--5/27/19, Pocahontas, Iowa”
consists
of a transcript compiled by her son Jerry Yocum in 1997, with explanatory
footnotes, an epilogue, and photographs.
In the diary, which spans the period 1915 to 1919 and measures 0.5
linear inch, she relates many details regarding her family and the people of
Pocahontas, a town of 1100 residents.
Her diary reflects the “busyness” of the adolescent years, her job at
the Variety Store, the devastation caused by Spanish influenza, the onset of
World War I, and other societal changes.
