Biography
Jacqueline
Scott, a Keokuk, Iowa educator and community activist, has been involved with celebrating
the history of the African-American community in Keokuk. Her activities have included publishing a
companion newspaper for the town’s “Taste of Africa” celebrations and compiling
a teacher’s resource packet on African-American history in Keokuk and Fort
Madison, entitled We Shall Overcome.
Scope and Content Note
The Jacqueline Scott papers date from 1988 to 1997 and measure 2.5 linear inches. The papers consist primarily of a resume, community newspapers, educational material, and photocopied photographs of Scott’s relatives. The photocopied photographs also appear in Scott’s teacher’s resource packet on African-American history in Southeast Iowa, We Shall Overcome. The community newspapers folders consist of advertisements for the “Taste of Africa” celebration, Taste of Africa 1995 newspaper, 1994 NAACP (Keokuk Chapter 4018) Black Awareness month newspaper, and a newspaper relating to the 1995 annual Keokuk Civil War Reenactment. The educational material consists of the resource packet We Shall Overcome and some issues of Backpacking Across the Curriculum, a newspaper for teachers edited by Scott. It also includes a goals statement and a scrapbook of materials that document Wells-Carey Kids Care, a service-learning project Scott implemented for Keokuk first graders to benefit students in the Red Shirt Elementary School on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in Pine Ridge, South Dakota.
