History
The National League of American Pen Women,
Waterloo-Cedar Rapids Branch, was organized in 1932 by Beulah Vick Bickley.
Bickley had been a member of the National League of American Pen Women in St.
Louis, Missouri before her move to Waterloo, and she created the group for
women from across Iowa. Members from Decorah, Mechanicsville, Marion, and
Lenox, Iowa, faithfully attended meetings. Members of the group attended
conferences, created a scholarship fund for area students, and invited speakers
to attend their meetings. In addition, club participants published a variety of
literature, including poetry, gardening books, children’s stories, and
newspaper articles.
Scope and
Content Note
Although theBegin text here: National League of American Pen
Women, Waterloo-Cedar Rapids Branch originated in 1932, their records in the
Iowa Women’s Archives date from 1944-2000. The records measure one
linear foot and are divided into four series: Administrative, Secretary Books,
Member Files, and Scrapbooks. The administrative records include
annual yearbooks which list club members and outline the locations and speakers
for the group’s meetings. The member files contain information about individual
members, including biographical articles, news clippings, and Jane Primus’ undated
book of poetry, Through the Window. The club’s scrapbooks and
secretary’s books, which contain news clippings, photographs, and programs of
club activities, complete the series. Where noted, some items have been
disbound for preservation and placed into folders in their original order.
