»History

The National League of American Pen Women, Waterloo-Cedar Rapids Branch, was organized in 1932 by Beulah Vick Bickley. Bickley had been a member of the National League of American Pen Women in St. Louis, Missouri before her move to Waterloo, and she created the group for women from across Iowa. Members from Decorah, Mechanicsville, Marion, and Lenox, Iowa, faithfully attended meetings. Members of the group attended conferences, created a scholarship fund for area students, and invited speakers to attend their meetings. In addition, club participants published a variety of literature, including poetry, gardening books, children’s stories, and newspaper articles.
