Biography

Physician Marion M. Maresh Fooks, born ca.1906, graduated with a degree in medicine from the State University of Iowa (now the University of Iowa) in 1932, the same degree her father George Maresh had completed in 1900. Maresh’s two brothers Gerald and George followed suit in 1939 and 1943 respectively. After completing her residency in radiology at Stormy Memorial Hospital in Rochester, New York, Maresh moved to Denver, Colorado to work with the Child Research Council at the Univesity of Colorado. Although she initially intended to stay for a year, Maresh’s tenure extended to 35 years during which time she established herself as a world renowned authority on physical growth and maturation. The Board of Regents granted Maresh the title of Associate Clinical Professor of Radiology Emeritus upon her retirement from the University of Colorado Medical Center in 1975. Married to Rupert J. Fooks, she professionally used the name Dr. Marion Maresh.

Scope and Content Note

The Marion Maresh papers date from 1932 to 1996 and measure 2.5 linear inches. The papers are arranged in two series: Biographical information and Medical career and education.

The Biographical Information series (1967-1996) consists of a list of birth and death dates within the Maresh family, a letter written by Gerald Maresh detailing his family history and a DynaGroup motivational program that consists of ten goal setting sessions

Maresh’s career as a researcher is reflected in the Medical Career and Education series (1932-1987), which consists of a book draft, correspondence, research notes, lecture slides, and an embryology text. Maresh’s Physician’s Certificate of 1932 and a letter of congratulations from the Dean’s office of the University of Colorado’s School of Medicine regarding her retirement in 1975 complete the series.
