Biography
Edna A. Herbst, a pioneer in Iowa broadcasting, was born in 1924 in Newton, Iowa. She graduated from the State University of Iowa (now the University of Iowa) in 1946 with a degree in speech and journalism. While at the State University of Iowa, she was on staff at the university’s radio station, WSUI. Herbst was also president of the University Women’s Association and a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority, Zeta Phi Eta and Delta Sigma Rho honorary speech fraternities, Phi Beta Kappa honorary scholastic fraternity, and Mortar Board.
Edna Herbst moved to Cedar Rapids in 1947 to become the promotion and program director for the Cedar Rapids Gazette’s new radio station, KCRG. One of her first assignments was introducing FM radio to eastern Iowa. Herbst started working for KCRG-TV when it began operating in 1953. She rose from chief writer and editorialist to become the vice president and assistant general manager before retiring in 1986. Herbst died in 2003.
