GEORGIA PEESO HAYGARTH (1882-1952) PAPERS, 1912-1915
BiographyGeorgia Margaret Peeso, the youngest child of Lana Bowers Peeso and Melvin Moses Peeso, was born in Spencer, Iowa on August 2, 1882. She spent her entire life in Spencer, and had the distinction of having been born and having died in the same house. Peeso grew up with an older brother, Louis, and an older sister, Mary “Matie.” Peeso received her education in the Spencer schools and taught in Clay County rural schools in Spencer and Every. On October 22, 1912 she married William Walter Haygarth. William Haygarth was a businessman in Spencer, owning and operating the Haygarth Drug Store and Soda Fountain. The couple had one son, George W. Haygarth. Georgia Haygarth was a member of Grace Methodist church in Spencer. She took an active interest in church affairs and sang for many years in the church choir. William Haygarth died May 4, 1933 after falling from the second floor porch of their home. Georgia Haygarth died March 27, 1952. Scope and Content NoteThe Georgia Peeso Haygarth papers date from 1912 to 1952 and measure 2.5 linear inches. The Biography folder consists of a copy of Haygarth’s 1952 obituary and papers pertaining to Peeso family history. Among the family history papers is a transcription of the journal Melvin Moses Peeso kept while logging in California in 1859. Haygarth’s diaries span the last eleven years of her life when she was a widow living alone. The entries are filled with her daily activities, including housekeeping chores, and the activities of friends and family. From 1941 to 1945 she makes references to World War II, and she often comments on the weather and the price of crops. The last entry is less than three weeks before her death. An undated photograph of Haygarth is also included in the collection.
