Biography
Thelma Carmichael was the only child of Mr. and Mrs. S.D. Carmichael, an old family in the Tama, Iowa community. In 1905, S.D. Carmichael patented a playpen he designed for his only child. Called “Thelma’s Screened Cariole,” the playpen was manufactured by S.D. Carmichael, promoted through an illustrated booklet and sold both directly and through furniture stores. In 1948, Thelma Carmichael was still a well known citizen of Tama, serving as secretary-treasurer of the Tama County Historical Society of Iowa
Scope and Content Note
The Thelma Carmichael papers date from 1905 and 1948 and measure 0.25 linear inches. The papers consist of two items. There is the illustrated booklet “Thelma’s Screened Cariole,” used to promote the playpen designed by S.D. Carmichael, Thelma’s father. With the booklet are photographs of the playpen in both its assembled and folded states. The second item is “A Pictorial Record of Historical Exhibits in the Tama County Court House,” a 1948 Tama County Historical Society publication that lists Thelma Carmichael as secretary-treasurer of the organization.
