         Barbara McDonald Calderon, an African-American nurse as born on August 11, 1915. She received her diploma from the School of Nursing in Kansas City, Missouri in 1940, her B.A. degree from Drake University in 1952, and her M.N.A. degree from the University of Minnesota in 1963.

         She served as a lieutenant in the Army Nurse Corps at the Station Hospital, Camp San Luis Obispo, California during World War II. Calderon was Iowa's first African-American public health nurse. She also worked as the Veterans' Administration hospital administrator in Iowa City, Iowa.

         In 1963 Governor Harold Hughes appointed Calderon to the Iowa Commission on the Status of Women.


Scope and Content Note

         The Barbara M. Calderon papers date from 1945 to 1968 and 1995? and contain 18 items. Two newspaper clippings, dated 1945 and 1948, and several photographs are included in this collection. The papers also include memoranda, minutes, study objectives, and other material relating to a Nursing Study Committee that was appointed at the Veterans Administration Hospital in 1965 to study the hospital’s nursing services. Calderon served as committee chairperson. These materials were transferred from the Myrtle Aydelotte papers. The certificate from Governor Harold Hughes proclaiming Calderon's appointment to the Commission on the Status of Women is also included here.
