This electronic version of Houston Lowe's "Paints for Steel Structures, 5th edition" was produced from an example of the edition published in 1910 by John Wiley & Sons, Inc. (New York) and Chapman & Hall, Limited (London). The first edition was published in 1899. The physical object is in the collection of The University of Iowa Libraries. Its call number is 543.3 .L91 Ed. 5

The original text was scanned with an HP Scanjet 3500c and recognized with OmniPage Pro 12. No attempt was made at this stage to correct the text. Rather, it was saved in rough form as a single text (.txt) file. Further manipulations took place in Microsoft Word. Corrections to the text were made manually, referring to the original in all cases of doubt. The completed draft was copied and transferred to Microsoft Office for further processing. This step eliminated "curved" quotation marks and other symbols that are outside the html set.

HTML templates were prepared for chapter headings, even, and odd pages. The text was transferred to the templates by cut-and-paste, with an .htm file created for each page. As part of this process, the navigation elements of the templates were changed as appropriate for each page.

While it was not my intent to produce a true facsimile edition, attempts were made to be reasonably faithful to the original formatting, to the extent that this was practicable with html text.

While every reasonable attempt was made to ensure accuracy of transcription, doubtless there are errors.
