The present bibliography deals with the Sahel countries, i.e. the CILSS-countries (Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Senegal and Chad). The focus is on the West-African part of the Sahel. The bibliography does not pretend to be exhaustive, we hope to have brought together here some of the most important references on the subject, notably pastoralism, the use and management, as well as the degradation of natural resources, the relationship between agriculture and animal husbandry, the land tenure problem and rural development in the context of decentralisation and the idea of popular participation. Several references which are not specifically dealing with the Sahel have been incorporated all the same, because of the considerable importance of their contents for the problems of dry areas in general. The bibliography lists both monographs, journal articles and chapters from edited works, as well as some bibliographies. In cases where the subject at hand was particularly interesting, you will find, besides the reference to the whole book, the references to separate articles. The bibliography covers the period 1985–1999; the research has been done between June 1999 and January 2000.
The majority of the references included are in English and French. They are recuperated from the following sources: the Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) of the African Studies Centre in Leiden, the Netherlands; the database of IBISCUS, a French information system for development matters based in Paris which has been forced to cease its activities in the second half of 2001, the CD-ROM Tropag & Rural (Abstracts on tropical agriculture and on rural development in the Tropics) of the Royal Tropical Institute, Amsterdam, the Netherlands; AGRALIN (the Union Catalogue of Agricultural Libraries in the Netherlands), Wageningen, the Netherlands; the CD-ROM CAB Abstracts, Cab International, Wallingford, Slough, United Kingdom and the Africana collection of the Northwestern University Library, Evanston, Il., USA, that can be accessed through the Nucat OPAC.
The entries are arranged alphabetically by author, and contain the following information: author/organization, title, edition, place of publication, number of pages (article: periodical, volume, issue, pages). Author and subject indexes, in English and French, are included.
La présente bibliographie porte sur la problématique des zones arides du Sahel, notamment le Sahel ouest-africain. La bibliographie ne prétend pas à l'exhaustivité; on espère avoir réuni ici quelques-unes des références les plus pertinentes sur le sujet. Ce sujet est notamment le pastoralisme et ses problèmes, la dégradation, l'utilisation et la gestion des ressources naturelles, les relations entre agriculture et élevage, le problème foncier et le développement rural, tout ceci dans le cadre de la décentralisation et l'idée de la participation populaire. Plusieurs références ne portant pas spécifiquement sur le Sahel ont été ajoutées quand même dans le cas où il s'agit de titres ayant un intérêt considérable pour la problématique. Les références repérées sont des ouvrages, des articles de périodiques ou bien des chapitres d'ouvrages collectifs, ainsi que quelques bibliographies. Au cas où le sujet traité a été très intéressant, on trouve, parallèlement à la référence à l'ouvrage tout entier, les références aux chapitres séparés. La bibliographie couvre la période 1985-1999; la recherche a été conduite entre juin 1999 et janvier 2000.

La bibliographie est conçue à partir d'une base de données gérée dans le logiciel Reference Manager. Les index ont été produits à l'aide de Procite. Si l'on interroge la base de données dans Reference Manager, on trouvera encore plus de renseignements; ainsi, beaucoup de références contiennent des résumés.
